In 1730, Juan Famenias Floris arrived in England from his native Menorca seeking his fortune as a barber and comb-maker in the elegant quarter of London's St James. However, he missed the aromas and sensations of his Mediterranean youth and set about re-creating these from memory, blending oils and essences transported from Europe.

While blending fragrances for customers on an individual basis, recording the formulas so further supplies could be ordered it quickly became apparent that this was Juan Floris's true vocation and these fragrances have remained at the heart of the Floris business to this day.

The barber's shop became the elegant setting for fragrances and accessories with beautiful handmade hair combs imported from Menorca, and shaving brushes, hatpins, toothbrushes, fine-tooth combs while razor straps were made on the premises.

In the 18th century Jermyn Street was the epicentre for distinguished London gentlemen, close to the Royal Court of St James and at the heart of Gentlemen’s' 'club land'. Before long, the first of 16 Royal Warrants was granted to J. Floris Ltd as 'smooth pointed comb-makers' to the newly appointed King George IV, in 1820. Ever since, Floris has always held at least one Royal Warrant and today hold two - as perfumers to HM Queen Elizabeth II and as manufacturers of Toilet Preparations to HRH the Prince of Wales.

Renowned as originators of the finest fragrances and with over 280 years experience in the family perfumery who’s to argue. Floris is the oldest perfumer in London and amazingly is still run by the eighth generation of the founder. The Floris name has always been synonymous with the finest floral fragrances and desirable, superior products where craftsmanship and quality is paramount.

Since opening in 1730, Floris has provided fragrances, fine toiletries and accessories to an incredibly loyal customer base. The archives hold reams of treasured letters from many famous customers detailing their preferences and thanks.
